on-the-fly package installation doesn't work

Post by peternaaijen »

hi,
I'm using Miktex 2.8 and TeXnicCenter as editor on a windows XP machine. (installed the whole system recently by the using ProteXt.)
In the Miktex settings I chose 'yes' at 'Install missing packages on-the-fly'. However, when attempting to use an uninstalled package in my code, instead of installing it, I get the following error when building:
! LaTeX Error: File `anufinalexam.sty' not found.

Type X to quit or <RETURN> to proceed,
or enter new name. (Default extension: sty)

Enter file name:
! Emergency stop.
<read *>

l.9

*** (cannot \read from terminal in nonstop modes)
I've browsed all topics that involved on the fly installation of pachages but haven't found a solution for my problem yet.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks!

Is this package known to the MiKTeX package manager? It can only install ones it knows: perhaps the database needs updating, for example.

thanks Joseph but yes, it should be known as it is in the list shown by the Miktex package manager. (the problem occurs with all uninstalled packages so far, actually this one is just to demonstrate the problem, don't need it at all.)

on-the-fly package installation doesn't work

ANUfinalexam doesn't contain a package file that could be included as usual (see attachment). If the problem with automatic package installation occurs with all other not installed packages, check the according settings in the MiKTeX Options (see attachment).

Best regards and welcome to the board

on-the-fly package installation doesn't work

Post by peternaaijen »

thanks again for the reaction.
it seems indeed that this particular package couldn't be installed on the fly.
however, when trying to use quite a few other uninstalled packages, a new problem appeared: the famous "GUI framework cannot be initialized" error message.
I already followed the instructions found at http://www.miktex.org/2.8/issues and set both the user and admin setting concerning on the fly installation of packages to 'yes'. still the GUI framework error...
I'm using Texniccenter 1.0, Miktex 2.8 on a normal 32 bit Windows XP machine.
I'd really appreciate further help. (since the topic title is still adequate, I decided to continue this topic rather than starting a new one)

Consider a full installation. That can't do any harm.

Could the problem be the same one as this one that was also posted today?:
http://www.latex-community.org/forum/vi ... f=9&t=9082

In that thread I posted that I've had a similar problem, which says "Windows API Error 87" on popup dialog, and that the workaround is to reboot the computer. So far it's worked for me. . . (Maybe there's just some process you can kill in the task manager, but I haven't checked out that route out.)

I ran the TeXworks as admin and all of a sudden everything works perfectly. I have a standard account on Windows 8.1

Have faced the same problem with Win 10 (MiKTeX 2.9, TeXStudio 2.10.2).

Right mouse click on .exe of the program in which you are compiling files (texstudio, texworks) -> Properties -> Compatibility -> check the box "Run as administator".
