How can I force the next column to begin in a certain spot?

Give a concrete explanation of what you are aiming at. Add a sketch if necessary.

I'm making a poster, and it has 3 columns. I want to have the next column start at a specific point. But latex tries to make all the columns the same length, so it starts the next column at a random point in order to make them all equal length. Right now my only option seems to be to add forced whitespace line by line in order to force the break where I want, but then if I change some text, I have to rework the whitespace. I figure there must be an easier way. Like forcing a new page in a wysiwyg editor, but with columns instead of pages.

Thanks.
