Perhaps it is a good idea to include decision guidances for bibliographies and indexes, similar to the ones provided for the LaTeX distributions and editors. I don't think this should be an entire subforum where people can ask questions which is best for them, but more like a sticky post (or maybe a Know How article with a link in the forum) that provides an overview of the various options and pro's and con's. Then maybe the forums `BibTeX' and `Makeindex' should also be renamed to something like `Bibliographies (BibTeX/Biber)' and `Indexes and glossaries (makeindex, xindy)'.
It seems to me that these overviews are not very easy to find (or am I just really bad at using Google?

), and the only thing that comes close are the wikibooks pages on these subjects, but those are more half-baked tutorials being somewhere halfway between a tutorial and an overview of the possibilities.
I know I could just open a new topic in either forum, but I think that's a bit of an invitation for a flame war, and will just grow to a long conversation instead of (preferably) a single post/article showing all possibilities.
On the matter of who would write this, perhaps a few users would volunteer to team up for one or both topics. I would definitely be willing to help writing the overview for the bibliographies, and I would really hope someone else could do his best on the indexing part because I'm looking into that now but rather lost which way would be best to start of with
