Can't figure out where Mactex installed Texlive

Post by texuser12345 »

Hi everyone. I'm new to this and I was hoping someone could halp me out. I can't seem to figure out where Mactex installed texlive on my computer. I installed mactex from here http://tug.org/mactex/ but cannot find where it put texlive; it is not under applications/tex. The texlive utility is there, but not the actal program.

Any help is much appreciated!!

TeX Live is not a program but a collection of TeX related programs. Perhaps look for TeXshop or TeXworks in your applications, those are TeX editors contained in MacTeX.

The TeX Live bundle is located somewhere in your file system, exactly at /usr/local/texlive. This page explains the contents of the MacTeX distribution. To know precisely what is installed by MacTeX and where it goes, follow the link "What Is Installed".

Thanks you guys. So there is no program called texlive? So TexShop is pretty much the best I can do as far as a GUI for osx? It seems so far inferior to something like MikTex for windows. What a bummer, almost makes me want to install parallels!

Anyways, guess I'll stick with Texshop. Thanks again!

That's correct. That's the name of the TeX distribution, i.e. software collection. Also MiKTeX is the name of that Windows specific distribution, it's not a program.

What's the name if the program you used?

Many people like this GUI. Of course you can use other GUIs, such as TeXworks (probably also installed) or Texmaker, which is a more complex GUI with many features. There's even a Kile port.

Why do you think this? What do you miss?

Why not, so you can even run Linux with TeX Live on your Mac. ;-)

Sorry stephan, I just had a total brain fart. What I meant was that I was looking for something user friendly like TeXnicCenter that is on windows. It has all those toolbars that really help when I can't think of the command for a certain symbol or character.

Thanks!

Texmaker, TeXstudio and Kile are such extensive GUIs, running also on a Mac, have a look at their homepages. The last one is probably hard to install, the first one easy.

Well, there are more free editors: TeXworks (already installed by the MacTeX distribution), TeXnicle, AlphaX, etc. In the Apple Store you may find TeXpad and Latexian.
