Which is better? TeXnicCenter or WinEdt?

Post by gcheer3 »

I am still new to Latex. I begin to use TeXnicCenter, and I got help here.

But my friend uses WinEdt, he said WinEdt is much better.

So any suggestions? which is more convenient? which has more integrated functions?

Which is better? TeXnicCenter or WinEdt?

Post by Stefan Kottwitz »

Hi,

I was using WinEdt a long time ago and I was very satisfied with it, at least during 30 days. After that period a registration/ purchasing of a license is required. That was not necessary for me because I changed to Linux. Regarding WinEdt you could get an impression by looking at winedt.com.

TeXnicCenter on the other side is open source and freely available. When I'm occasionally using Windows, then with TeXnicCenter, it has enough features for me and works fine.

Im a TeXnicCenter user. Im happy with what TexnicCenter can do for me. I don't know WinEdt very well but I believe TeXnicCenter is good enough to help you with a lot of features. It is highly customizable and free.

I have used WinEdt and TeXnicCenter extensively. WinEdt is much more customizable and has more features. I recommend trying both of them before you decide to pay for WinEdt. I prefer WinEdt, but it is sometimes a bit overwhelming and maybe too customizable.

When I use TeXnicCenter, I still write code by myself. I didnt use any their function. I only use that"build current file" to make a pdf. Because when I insert something, it always gives me error. And I dont know how to use the math bar

I use TEXnicCenter and I am very happy with it.
I think it is good enough to work with LaTeX and it is free.

When I started using LaTeX, I came across WinEdt and used that for the first few months. I think I wrote a whole internship thesis with it (mainly because it was pre-installed on the University PC's). That was great for the time being, but when I switched to TeXnicCenter some time ago, and found out about the endless options to customize it to your own preferences I was directly sold. For instance, TeXnicCenter has some build in templates for certain environments, which you can customize to your own preferences. Anyway, in short... I'm a big TeXnicCenter fan.

Cheers

Thanks guys. Good information here. I am going to start working with Latex to write my thesis.
I have three questions,
1) I noticed in wikipedia, that TexnicCenter has no "find and replace" feature. :(
Is this true? If yes, what do you recommend? Since as you know, sometimes, you want to replace a word or name with another, and you don't want to do it manually.
2) Are the commands in TexnicCenter and winedt the same? I mean for example, if you want to add a reference or import a class in winedt or TexnicCenter, you use the same command?
3) The classes which we can import them in to winedt, can we import them to TexnicCenter also? Or they use different classes?
Thanks a lot!
