MiKTeX and proTeXt ⇒ MikTeX Gives an Error on updating

Hello, I installed MikTex in windows 7 64-bit today and tried to update with MikTex update manager. After loading the nearest remote repository available updates, I moved on to click "Next" and update, only to receive the message:

Sorry, but something went wrong:

The executed process did not succeed.

fileName = "C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\x64\initexmf.exe",
arguments = "--force --mklinks --verbose", exitCode="1"

After that, no matter how many times I try to install the packages, installation always fails. I would like to use LaTeX but with this issue I can't really do anything at all.
I have included the .log file if that helps at all.

Hi Mitscay,

welcome to the forum!

I used MiKTeX many years ago, before I changed to TeX Live. That TeX version, supported by the TeX Users Group, is another option if MiKTeX doesn't work for you.

Ok, I now tried to install TeX Live and by the end of the installation I get the error of the form:

Error, for better info unpack then run install-tl-windows.bat or install-tl-advanced.bat

How should I proceed with this one?

Did you get some more text in addition to this error message?

Sometimes the installation over Internet may stop if there's an interruption in the connection to the server. In that case, simply run install-tl-windows.bat again. The installation checks the already downloaded packages and continues then. I had to start several times when I had a bad Internet connection.

Well I tried around 50 times until now but all I get is the same message as above. Perhaps something is not compatible with Windows 7? I do not know how to install it and I really need it :/

TeX Live is compatible to Windows 7, 8, 10, and others.

Just tell us more details, any. Such as other messages.

Hey mitscay,
as you are aware, I had some difficulties with the latest MikTeX update as well. Following Stefan Kottwitz' advice, I tried to switch to TeXLive and encountered the same problem. After trying to track the problem down, I figured out that -- at least for me -- it was a problem of the path where TL tried to install the distribution: in the driver's folder for the for the wireless network adapter it could not find any system files nor did the batch file have enough rights to write.

For me, the following edit of the install-tl-windows.bat helped: search for PATH and add after the default path provided the following (including the quotation marks!):

For me, running the install-tl-advanced.bat showed to be more successful. As it calls the install-tl-windows.bat, you need to add the changes only in the latter.
