Issues installing TeX Live: Unpacking

Post by pryan »

Good day folks,

OS: Windows 7

I downloaded TeX Live from the https://www.tug.org/texlive/acquire-netinstall.html page and proceeded to run the install-tl-windows.exe script. It is painfully slow, so much so, it never finishes and usually errors with the attached error.

Is this due to a slow internet connection? I have attempted this several times and it has never gotten past 500/3270 installations. I just started a new contract with a company whereby they want their technical documentation done with LaTeX. Its been 25 years since I last used LaTeX. Anxious to get back into it ... just have to get it installed! :-)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll definitely try and find a better connection somewhere and give it a go ... in the meantime, could there be anything else that is preventing this?

Thanks
pryan

Furthermore, the error message that is displayed is attached ...

I did attempt an "unpack" last evening with a better connection but ran into the same slowness.

Any ideas? Anyone? :-)

Thanks
Paul

Issues installing TeX Live: Unpacking

Hi Paul,

I installed TeX Live on Linux and on Mac OS X the last times, without running into such an problem.

You got enough hard disk space, yes?

Installations can be interrupted. But when you restart, it should continue on the "broken" point, so after some tries it should be completed.

If the installer GUI tool doesn't run, perhaps try it at the command prompt (cmd).

Also, you could change the download repository, so use another server. Full documentation: http://tug.org/texlive/doc/texlive-en/texlive-en.html

Issues installing TeX Live: Unpacking

Personally, i would use the command line to install. The hint about the repository is also very good.

If internet connection is really bad, you can get the TeX Live DVD with a quite recent snapshot. Only a couple of package updates would be needed. But this should be your last resort.
The smart way: Calm down and take a deep breath, read posts and provided links attentively, try to understand and ask if necessary.

As mentioned on the "New Members" forum, I kicked off this install on an Ubuntu box. It did get further than the other attempts but unfortunately did get interrupted, this time after 647/3286 packages. The error is below.

I was expecting, once re-starting the install, that it would pick up where it left off but it appears it starts all over. Are there any [EXTRA-ARGS] that I could specify to get it to resume, as opposed to starting over?

Thanks

Just restart, it will check the first 646 files but run faster over them and continue.

Just circling back ... I have succeeded in installing TeX Live ... as it turns out a better internet connection was necessary.

Onward and upward.
