I have a document in book mode which when I create the index it starts on a new page. Is there a way to override this and get the index to start on the same page as the last text in the document?

There is, but this is very very bad practice. An index should always start on its own page.

If you really want to remove the clearpage, you have to use package etoolbox and patch the original command/environment.

Yes I take your point. But I think I have worked out a good, well less bad, way of doing what I want so I don't need to resort to "very very bad practice"
