Help starting up TeXLive

Post by hudu28 »

Hello everyone,

I have decided to switch from TexnicCenter to TeXLive in order to get DVIPS, which I need to draw syntactic trees. Now I have installed it, and it has 17 files and components on my computer, including Tex doc GUI, Tex Live manager, Tex Live manuals in many languages, ps view etc. But none of these provides an environment for me to type in text and compile or open my existing my existing tex files. So I simply can not use TexLive. I've spent hours trying to figure this out but haven't succeeded. Am I missing something? I need urgent help.

Thank you in advance.

Hudu.

Help starting up TeXLive

Hi Hudu,

TeXnicCenter is not a distribution, it's a LaTeX Editor/ IDE for Windows that supports MiKTeX and TeXlive. So you probably switched from MiKTeX to TeXlive. You can keep TeXnicCenter, but you have to change the output profiles, the path settings to the TeXlive compiler.

Btw. I think MiKTeX should also work together with dvips.
Furthermore I prefer drawing trees using pgf/TikZ, it works with pdftex, see for instance the extensive pgf manual or this screenshot and the TikZ examples gallery by Kjell Magne Fauske.
