Latex replacement for Equation Editor in MS Word

Post by omorr »

Hi all,

It seeems I have the privilege to open this forum.
I am a Latex and Tex fan using many different Latex-Tex related products. I am quite satisfied with TexnicCenter. Actually, I am using TexnicCenter+MikTex most frequently (on Windows platform). I wish all the best to the creators of this nice product.

I just wanted to ask If someone knows how to replace Equation Editor in MS Word with some Latex related product. Everybody knows that Equation Editor produces ugly equations. I am trying to find something Latex related to replace it for a long time but without sucess. I feel that there must be some WYSIWIG editor with Latex-Tex power for MS Word but could not find one.

Regards

Unless you're really bonded to MS Word, you can consider using AbiWord (http://www.abisource.com/). It has native support for adding LaTeX formulas. This means that you can edit them with double clicking.

The other solution might be using program like LaTeXRender (http://www.mayer.dial.pipex.com/tex.htm) which saves equations as images which you can put in MS Word than.

Thanx,

I am using AbiWord and it is OK. The LaTex support is one of the feature I like most but it is included in the recent versions of AbiWord. It is intended for shorter LaTex input and I think we would have to wait for few more releases in order to have better LaTex and MathML support. Unfortunately, I could not find enough documentation or help about those AbiWord features.

Thank yoy for the LaTexRender link. I will definitely use it. At this site the Texaide is mentioned also http://www.dessci.com/en/products/texaide/ . It could be quite useful for those used to Equation Editor. I personally am not bonded to MS Word and in fact I am trying to persuade my collegues (Word users) to use TexnicCenter and Texaide in order to obtain much better quality of heavy math text.

I tried ribbit (http://nameless.ca) and I like it. It could be one of my sollutions. Moreover, I think I found something in order to insert Latex-based equations into MS Word, especially for those who are tied to "Visual" editing. It is Equation Magick (EqMagic 2) (http://www.micropress-inc.com/eqmpro/index.html). I tried free (Lite) version (it is a bit restricted from the Pro version) and it has all the preferable features for the "stubborn" Word users:
- "Visual" editing in one window (lots of symbols and templates)
- Latex expression in another (for comparison)
- fast

Although at Mathematics department here MikTex is regularlly used I tried to persuade my collegues (maths oriented Word users) to use "Visual" Latex based tools like Lyx, Texmacs or even Scientific Workplace but with no success. They stick with Word. At least, I could try to introduce them with Equation Magic. If someone knows any other symilar product like Equation Magic please let me know.

Thanks

There is another product called TeXaide (http://www.dessci.com/en/products/texaide/).

Basically you "type" an equation just like EquationEditor and then copy the equation and paste it into the .tex file. TeXaide automatically performs the translation to LaTeX.

Thank you Patrick,

I already mentioned that in the previous post. I tried to replace Equation Editor with Equation Magic (http://www.micropress-inc.com/eqmpro/index.html). This is just I was looking for. Unfortunatelly, Lite version (free) has the restriction concerning the equation size and this could be anoying sometimes.

Since AbiWord's LaTeX support has already been mentioned, I figured I should toss OOoLatex in too:

http://ooolatex.sourceforge.net/

Though anyone using LaTeX equations might want to practice simply converting entirely to LaTeX; both you and your documents will be better off.

Thanks,

I agree. I tried AURORA some time ago (former "ribbit") and was quite satisfied.
Unfortunately, I could not find any FLOSS of this kind and quality.
