Two weeks in and I'm love'n it

Post by Mr. Book »

Hey everyone,

I'd heard a lot about latex in college, my profs loved it; yet, there was no class on it. Now I'm out and am a programmer by trade. So now I work as a peon at a big a-- company. I've found one chief difference between management and techs. techs want to read logs, txt files are fine by us. management want to read report, the prettier the better. hey, that fine by me, it makes no difference to me to output some format code to make my text look pretty. So one of my jobs has been to create reports for management. I tried using HTML which was easy and everyone has a browser on there computer so I thought it was a good idea. after my boss told me that it looked nice but they don't want their reports "online" I figure going to PDF via Latex is a better idea. And yes I tried to explain the difference between a local .htm file and one you get from a website, but thats a story for another time. Which brings me to this lovely community. I've started to teach myself latex by converting a text file of alice and wonderland into a PDF file. I figure by the end I'll be able to know enough of latex to do a better job at work. I would like to thank everyone for helping me as I learn to use this excellent tool.

Greetings.

I'm a technical writer for a software company (on contract). My predecesor used Word 2007 to generate all of his content, but it was a nightmare for the developers to port to the formats they needed and it was driving me crazy. I agreed to learn LaTex (what's another markup language?) from scratch and am also loving it. I now know enough to manage my content on a day-to-day basis, but LaTeX is vast. I doubt I could ever learn everything it's capable of.

The community here has been very helpful and friendly, even though I've asked enough "newbie" questions to cross their collective eyes.

Welcome.
