General Connection Problems

Post by Brukernavn »

Hi,

I'm having problems connecting to anything with MikTex. I'm a Lyx 2.0 user and have MikTex 2.9 installed. When trying to update, install packages, synchonize, change repository or anything I get the same error message. An example from trying to synchronize the package database:
MiKTeX Problem Report
Message: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

Data: connect failed in tcp_connect()
Source: Libraries\MiKTeX\PackageManager\PackageManager.cpp
Line: 1544
MiKTeX: 2.9
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
Invokers: explorer
SystemAdmin: yes
PowerUser: no
Root0: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.9
Root1: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.9
Root2: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\MikTex
Root3: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.9
Root4: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9
UserInstall: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\MikTex
UserConfig: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.9
UserData: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.9
CommonInstall: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9
CommonConfig: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.9
CommonData: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.9
Trying to install a package or changing the repository gives me the same error message, with a different Line number.

When trying to run update:
---------------------------
MiKTeX Update Wizard
---------------------------
The operation could not be completed for the following reason:

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

Details: connect failed in tcp_connect()
Anyone have an idea what might be the problem?
I would appreciate any help.

I'm having the same problem. Will update if I see a solution elsewhere.

I was having the same problem and—for me—it was due to the default setting for package repository. By default, MikTeX 2.9 chooses a random repository; and if that repository isn't online, you get the "connection attempt failed" error message. To solve this problem, open MikTeX 2.9 >> Maintainance >> Settings. Click on the Packages tab and change the package repository to a nearby host.

I believe this thread is solved then. My problem was merely with a temporary workstation, on my own computer everything works fine. And hopefully jonlighthall has the solution for others with the same problem.

Edit: I'm having trouble editing the opening post. If a moderator could mark it as solved that would be appreciated.

I am having this same problem. However, the change package repository isn't connecting. I get this error message: connect failed in tcp_connect(). I've looked around online and seen many other people with this same problem but so far found no solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am having the same problem. When I try to change the host, it can't find a new one, says "connect failed in tcp_connect()."

Did anyone solve this problem? I have the same issue but I can't use jonlighthall's solution because I get the same error when I try to change the package repository.

I'm using MikTex 2.9 on Windows 7.

Hi leah_jane,

welcome to the forum!

Perhaps describe, what exactly you are doing for changing the repository. As doing it like above was the working solution, perhaps you did it slightly differently.

You could post your exact command line, and the error message you got. The repositories you already tried. Perhaps the other one wasn't online either.

Generally, feel free to create a new topic for any question you got. No need to attach to an older (solved) topic, where new problems are hard to see. We got enough space here for millions of new topics. ;-)
