LyX Outliner

Post by chulmelowe »

I'm trying to write an outline for a paper in LyX, and have found that there's a nice outline tool that comes with the software, but the line length on this tool is very short. I've noticed that if I put a space after the end of the line then it will output the whole line in the outline, but it never saves this formatting so I'd have to do it every time I open the document. Is there a more permanent way to increase this line length? I'm running the latest beta release of LyX.

You're talking about "Toggle Outline" which displays Table of Contents and other lists? I'm not sure if I understand what the problem actually is: you can change Outliner's width by dragging and it stays exactly the same when reopening a document or restarting the program.

It isn't the width of the outliner window that I'm having a problem with, but the number of columns it will print in each topic. I'm attempting to use it to help me organize quotations for the paper I'm writing, but at present the line ends after what feels like very few columns.

OK, can you create an example .lyx file which shows the issue? Just put some dummy text instead of your original text, place the .lyx file into a ZIP archive and attach it to your next post.

Okay, sorry it took a while to post again, it's been a busy day. I've attached an example file of the problem. You'll notice that it's cutting off the title of the section I made in the outline view. What I need is a way to increase the length of those lines so that it displays the whole title (obviously they're informative in the actual document).

Now I see what you mean: all entries get cut in Outline window after 38 characters (including spaces). I don't know why is that the case, but you might consider submitting a bug report.

Hi folks,

Is there any way of showing more than 38 characters in LyX Outline window? It is quite uncomfortable when section titles are longer than that

Thanks in advance,

I use that feature for story outlining too but I don't use the outline view itself as anything more than a convenient way to move through the document - the actual notes, I type in the document and then set the whole of each note to a Subsection*/Subsubsection*/etc to put its link in the outline, then as I type the actual text, I delete the note it's replacing and slowly the outline clears out. I don't think the outline feature (which is really a realtime TOC) is really intended to be used as anything other than a navigational aid and document visualizer - it's not for the whole content of an outline. Now, this may not be what you're looking to use the outline for, but there is an addon in development that adds storyboarding features: http://www.oak-tree.us/lyx-outline/. You might want to check that out. Otherwise, especially if your outline doesn't involve symbols/math/stuff best handled in LaTeX, you may just be trying to use the wrong program for what you want to do.
