Texniccenter LaTeX => PDF: still no good solution ?

Post by julienf »

Hello

I am still looking for a good solution to compile
LateX => PDF in texnixcenter without closing the PDF AND going back to the last view page , here is a little summary

I name Close OK or NOT OK when the closing before compile has problems
I name GoBack OK or NOT OK when the Go back to last view page functionnality is working or not
Here is what i tried :

Foxit Close OK & GoBack NOT OK: No problem with the close there are good scripts to close foxit, but There is a bug in version 2.2, the PDF viewer doenst go back to last viewed page, perhaps next version will do it fine

SumatraPDF Close OK & GoBack NOT OK: No need to close, sumatra PDF does not lock there file, but there is a very annoying bug (ver 0.8) with the refresh button "r", the window is moving and it is not going back to last view page. The developpers know the bug and will correct it in 0.9

Adobe reader Close OK & GoBack NOT OK : Acrobate Reader 8.1.2 works fine with DDE commands, but you cannot go back to the page whereyou stopped
There is an option : Restore last view settings, but it doesn't work if the pdf has changed (which is the case when you compile)

Anyone knows a good solution ?

Hi "julienf"

The problem you mention seems to be related to pdf viewers systems rather than latex.
I think you should get better support posting there, since they should know if it is possible to fine tune each pdf viewer
in command line with additional "currentpage" parameter

- AFAIR, this operation was possible using "WinEDT + acrobat 7".
- you may also prefer using dvi as a production viewer and produce pdf only at the very last phase

You should try to configure TeXnicCenter with GSview as PDF viewer. It observes an opened file for changes and reloads it if necessary without closing. Moreover it stays on the same place in the document. So you could forget about all these annoying DDE commands for closing the document. Since the Adobe Reader is the only viewer that understands these DDE commands, there is no alternative in this regard. But GSview could be more convenient. Just use normal command line arguments to get things work. My descriptions are based on experiences with GSview as PS viewer for the build profile "LaTeX => PS" in TeXnicCenter. But viewing a PDF should work the same way.
