Installing MinionPro Fonts

Post by alexandra_k »

I’m trying to install the font MinionPro on Texlive. I’ve also tried to install MnSymbol.

I’ve tried to install things into the local tree but I’m not quite sure how to do that correctly. What is worrying me in particular is the location of the .map file.

In the texmf-local tree there is a font folder, so I’ve installed the maps in there as follows:

usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/fonts/map/dvips/MinionPro/MinionPro.map
usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/fonts/map/dvips/MnSymbol/MnSymbol.map

But I’ve noticed that there is also a dvips folder in the texmf-local tree and I’ve also put things in there as follows:

usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/dvips/config/MinionPro.map
usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/dvips/config/MnSymbol/MnSymbol.map
usr/local/ empty

So… I’m not quite sure where the maps are supposed to go. I’m getting the error message:

!LaTeX Error: Option clash for package MinionPro

And no output on the PDF when I try and typeset.

*Should I delete one of the .map files and some of the folders? Where is the .map supposed to go?

Another problem that I’m having is that some of the instructions tell you to add a line of text to a file before you run texhash and updmap in terminal. I’ve done that as follows:

usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg

I added the line: Map MinionPro.map

Then I went to terminal and did texhash and updmap (after logging in). But… That wasn’t the right thing to do – was it???

*How is that step supposed to go? Any thoughts on the location of the file I’m supposed to alter?

*(I didn’t change the name of the Type1 files into their Berry names. That doesn’t matter – does it? There are thousands of Type1 files…)

Installing MinionPro Fonts

Did you take a look at the README file from the minionpro package? It describes in detail what to do for a successful installation.

Thanks for taking the time. Yes, the README package was the first place that I looked with respect to installing both MinionPro and MnSymbol.

My directory structure (the relevant parts of it) looks like this:

usr/local/texlive/2007/
usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/
usr/local/share/(there isn't a texmf-local in there)- but there are other folders/

Instructions:

> We will install to /usr/local/share/texmf. Check that this matches the definition of TEXMFLOCAL in your installation:
$ kpsexpand '$TEXMFLOCAL'
/usr/local/share/texmf
It is vital that you install to the right path in /usr/local.

It didn't match my installation so I renamed 'texmf-local' to 'texmf' and put it in the 'share' folder and put the relevant folders and files into that.

When I run texhash and attempt to update the map it updates things in the 2007 directory only. When I updmap-sys --enable MixedMap MnSymbol.Map it looks through the 2007 directory only and says it can't find the map and so I should move it into the proper place for it.

So I'm wondering... Where might that be?

Somewhere in the 2007 folder downstream of 'local'?

I apologize. I'm new to TeX and I'm not terribly proficient with computers. I've also recently switched from PC to Mac so really floundering.

A friend of mine had the .pbf files for MinionPro already converted so he passed them onto me and I'm getting the other files off CTAN (including the documentation and installation instructions).

I attempted to decode the instructions as to which files and folders go where so I could copy paste them (or create them myself) as I hadn't used terminal before. Terminal doesn't seem to like it when I type 'cd' on the start of a line - it tells me it can't find the cd directory or folder or whatever...

Someone from work showed me how to login to terminal (sudo bash) so I could do the last two steps in terminal. But aside from that I'm having difficulty understanding precisely where in the tree structure the font and pvf and type1 folders etc are supposed to go.

If anyone has any suggestions about where (in the above mentioned tree structure) I should put the installation, I'd be grateful. Or maybe... There is an alternative terminal command to get it to update the maps etc in the local tree rather than in the 2007 branch??

Sorry if I'm so hopelessly confused that I can't be helped...

Installing MinionPro Fonts

Hi,

I actually never tried to install these fonts on Mac, but judging from the directory structure you provided, it seems very similar to Linux. I'm not sure if this will help, but hey, you never know.

1. First, I'm not sure that was good idea to rename texmf-local to texmf. The command kpsexpand '$TEXMFLOCAL' should give you the right path to the local texmf which you should use instead of the path provided in the ReadMe file (I even installed MinionPro font in TEXMFMAIN which is on my machine /usr/share/texmf/).

2. Don't forget to check what version of MinionPro fonts you've got -- is it 1.000, 1.001 or 2.000 so you can pick the right encoding (enc-v.xxxx.zip) file. If your fonts are v1.000 and you install v1.001 or 2.000 it won't work. There are instructions in ReadMe file how to check this.

3. Fonts should be located in folder "fonts" somewhere in texmf. For example, on my machine it is in: /usr/share/texmf/fonts/. Notice that this is TEXMFMAIN on my machine, not TEXMFLOCAL. Try command in console: kpsexpand '$TEXMFMAIN' to learn where it is located and look in it. When you find fonts folder, you will notice couple of directories. Well, .pfb files go in type1 folder (type1/adobe/MinionPro). You'll find out easy where other fonts go

4. When you enter command "sudo updmap" in console, look at the output, you should see where .map files of other fonts are located. Usually, in fonts/map/dvips/ folder and some in fonts/map/pdftex/

Alternatively, if all other fail, you could try XeTeX (or XeLaTeX) through which you can use OpenType and TrueType fonts that are installed on your system without any kind of conversion. As you have TeXLive 2007 installed, I assume that XeTeX is already installed and ready to go.
