Section displaying as ".1 Introduction"

Post by busillis »

Hello!

I am very new to Latex, so please bear with me!

I realise that if I add a chapter command before the section that I would get 1.1, however I do not want my document to refer to things as chapters; I'm using this for my dissertation

Many thanks!

If you do not want chapters, use a class like the standard article class. But with regard to the expected comprehension of your document you should take into account that the structure of a document based on the article class could hit limits far to soon.

Thank you for your reply. That does seem to remedy my problem.

Is there a comparison available between report and article? I wish to ensure that further down the line issues do not arise due to the choice of document class.

Should be available with every basic LaTeX documentation. If you have access to a book for beginners, take a look at it. You can also do so with our special topic for novices [1]. The main differences are in document structuring and in the behaviour of lists (LoF, LoT, ToC, biliography).
