MiKTeX and proTeXt ⇒ can't install pgf with miktex, and beamer build hangs

Hi

quite new to latex, but I have texnic centre running and have had some success with it so far.

Now I want to use beamer to make some slides.

I installed beamer ok via miktex. I also installed xcolor, but when trying to install pgf, I get an error :

also, when I try to build one of the example beamer docs ( generic-ornate-15min-45min.en.tex ), the build just hangs, on this line:

("C:\ ..... \beamerbaseoptions.sty")

(unfortunately it doesn't seem to be possible to copy/paste the output in the build window ... )

I also tried manual download of pgf package, but I don't seem to be able to get miktex to see it and use it to install - when I try to say "use local directoy" it complains that the dir containing the tar.gz is not a repository.

so a number of problems ... any suggestions?

I suggest an upgrade to MiKTeX 2.6, because MiKTeX 2.5 is considered outdated.
