I recently used the Combine PDFs utility (and old one -- v.2.1) to play around with some PDFs. Now dvips seems to have lost its fonts. When I use dvips to create a PDF from a dvi file from a latex output I get something like this:
http://astro.cornell.edu/~jtwright/sample.png
or this:
http://astro.cornell.edu/~jtwright/sample2.png
There's no real rhyme or reason to which fonts get the bold sans-serif treatment -- sometimes it's italicized stuff, sometimes its the roman stuff. Every time I run dvips I get something different.
This once happened to me before, and I seem to recall that some library file got corrupted somewhere, maybe by Combine PDFs. Does anyone know what's going on?
Thanks
--Edit: Just to be clear, that big, bold sans-serif font is not the font I'm using it LaTeX. It's some sort of default being substituted in my dvips; the dvi file looks OK (although my xdvi program seems to be hanging, so I can't actually get a screen capture...)
TeX Live and MacTeX ⇒ fonts gone?
Re: fonts gone?
OK, isolating the problem...
It seems that Adobe Acrobat can read the files fine, but Preview chokes on them. Any idea why it's Preview that can't consistently load up the fonts?
thanks...

Re: fonts gone?
Turns out it's a bug in Preview. There are many programs which corrupt the font libraries. Apparently Acrobat can work around the corrupted files but Preview does not. Solution is not to use those programs and to reboot to repair the corrupted files.
