I'm trying to install MikTeX on a Windows XP Laptop but unfortunately the installation aborts nearly at the end, saying that an "error occured with mpm.exe". (I don't have the original output at hand). Furthermore the regsrv reports a failure. It seems to me that MikTeX has a problem with registering, the installation is so far ok. Unfortunately all exe files are within the folder except latex.exe and pdflatex.exe - which would be essential for Winshell . MikTeX is not recognized as a program within the Windows SoftwareList and so it cannot be uninstalled from there.
I tried basic and full install of MikTeX 2.7 and 2.6, with and without running a Firewall in the background or a antrivirus program.
At this point, I don't have really any idea how to go on

The System was full with trojans and malware and I had to get rid of them first with avira and hijackthis and I also tried to clean up the registry with some free tools. Is it possible that the abortion has something to do with a broken registry? And if - any ideas how this could be repaired?
If somebody has any idea, please write me back!
Many thanks and kind regards,
Eva
