having problems installing texniccenter and miketex. Would like to install in program files but message says you should install in user directory? Is there a step by step guide?

Only one short note: TeXnicCenter is quite old and has not been updated for several years. There are editors with better support and maintenance like TeXworks, TeXmaker or TeXstudio. All of these alternatives also have an integrated viewer so that you don't need to know how to configure the editor to use, e.g., version XYZ of the Adobe Reader. TeXworks is available as MiKTeX package (and usually be installed together with MiKTeX), so that it is very easy to use. And the download page of TeXstudio provides a portable version, that can be used without installation, if the usage of the also available installer fails.

Caveat: I'm not a Windows user, so I cannot help in installing TeXnicCenter.
