Greetings,
I first found out about LaTeX a couple of years ago. I can't remember how, but it was perfect timing. I despised the new MS Word even more than all the old ones, and had found OO Writer and WordPerfect inadequate at index creation (I'm a freelance Indexer). I saw LaTeX as a great alternative to word processing software. I liked the option to focus mainly on content rather than having to decide on fonts and image placement. And because I'm a nerd, I was willing to spend hours debugging my first creations and hunting around on the Internet to find out how to do what I wanted to do.
I made my resume in LaTeX. Actually, I'm having a minor layout issue with it, and that's what made me decide to finally join this forum. I need to ask a question. I thought I may as well introduce myself while I'm at it.
I used to work as a computer programmer, back in the days of COBOL. So it's funny that I never came across LaTeX earlier.
One of my favourite LaTeX packages is "booktabs." It makes very nice tables. I discovered it while working on a document with a bunch of tables in it and going through hell trying to keep them from looking awful. Booktabs saved my bacon.
That's all I can think of at the moment.

Welcome to the forum.
The smart way: Calm down and take a deep breath, read posts and provided links attentively, try to understand and ask if necessary.

Thanks Johannes and Stefan. Stefan: you know about indexing! That's refreshing. I'm constantly having to explain what it is.
