Re: Problem with Adobe Reader 8.0
I second Sumatra if you're looking for a reader to squeeze into your (small sized) usb flashdisk. But I found the fonts to be pretty rough. I won't be using it.
I have installed the Foxit reader. It doesn't have to be installed, it's just a .exe file.
I opened a doc in the acrobat reader and in the foxit reader, the feel is different but Foxit seems to have excellent fonts. I enlarged to the max and couldn't tell the difference between Foxit and Acrobat. Foxit does not have the annoying desktop type features of the Acrobat Reader 8.0. But it uses different shortcuts for zooming in/out and for displaying/removing bookmarks. This will be annoying during a transition period...
I think I'll adopt Foxit, but will report back if it's got bugs too!

Re: Problem with Adobe Reader 8.0
Foxit has 2 versions of its reader,
One must be installed:
http://us01.foxitsoftware.com/foxitread ... _setup.exe
One is an .exe file
http://us01.foxitsoftware.com/foxitread ... reader.zip
Sadly I wasn't able to configure TeXNicCenter to work with Foxit. It's probably high time for me to leave this thread quietly...

Problem with Adobe Reader 8.0
Oh my God I'm such an Idiot!!!
I can't believe how stupid I've been!! I updated From AR7 to AR8 and experienced the crashing and percuilar behaviour. I assumed it was to do with the DDE commands.
Adding as suggested previously worked ok, except that AR8 had to be open, TeXniC couldn't open AR8 once it was closed.
Anyway, to cut to the jist, turns out that numb nuts here forgot to change the path of the Adobe Reader once I'd upgraded!
If you're having the same problems I've described and you've upgraded from 7.0, press Alt+F7 to get the output profiles window. Make sure you have "Latex => PDF" highlighted on left hand side panel, then choose the Tab called "Viewer" and then look at the text string in the dialog box labelled "Path of executable". Make sure it points to Adobe Reader 8 folder and not 7!
I hope this helps someone.

PS: If this helps a lot of people, maybe an admin could post this as a formal solution so googlers dont have to trawl through 6 pages of postings?

Re: Problem with Adobe Reader 8.0
Unfortunately, the issue discussed in the thread here IS a DDE problem that occurs when the path to Acrobat Reader is correctly specified. Try to compile your document (as PDF), view it, and then recompile. What is very likely to happen is that AR crashes. Hence, this thread.

Doh! Well indeed You Sir are correct.
Turns out I do need the extra OpenDoc command (although my AR stabilty has increased dramatically since it figured out the correct path name 8) ).

Re: Problem with Adobe Reader 8.0
Hi,
Adobe Reader 8.1 is out now and my first tests show that the DDE issue should be fixed now. Can anyone else verify that, please?
Thanks
Roman

Re: Problem with Adobe Reader 8.0
There is a small and very useful tool available to handle the adobe reader at bioPDF. They have a commercial PDF Writer but this tool is free.
The tool is called Close Adobe Reader and is available at http://www.biopdf.com.

Re: Problem with Adobe Reader 8.0
I tried implementing the submissions of both Sven Wiegand and dmonkey but to still didn't work.
Initially it was working with miktek 2.5 and Acrobat 7.0 pro. However, now that I have upgraded
to Adobe reader 8.11 and miktex 2.7 it doesn't work. Pls any work around?

It seems mentions are made only in regards to changes to be effected under "view", what of
under "(La)tex"? Could that be the difference?
Thanks

Re: Problem with Adobe Reader 8.0
I just downloaded Adobe Reader 8 and didn't have any of the problems mentioned in this thread (except for having to point Texniccenter to the new executable, obviously) but my question is:
has anybody managed to get Adobe Reader 8 to automatically jump to the previous page I was viewing the last time I opened the pdf?
Word processing using Latex is even more painful than it normally is without this feature enabled. Even the alt left arrow trick that used to work in Adobe Reader 7 doesn't work for me now. I can't use Foxit because it still has the annoying feature of insisting on fully rendering every page that I skim past meaning to navigate around a large document contining lots of images using the arrow keys takes minutes not seconds. Adobe Reader will skim past a partly rendered page if the arrow keys are pressed again or held down which is much more useful.
