mgs in new MiKTeX version stop working with Windows XP

Post by spectorsky »

Hello,

Recently (some weeks ago) I updated MiKTeX on PC with Windows XP. However, dvipdfmx is loosing all eps picture, and the reason (as I see) in 'not win32' mgs. When I try to launch mgs.exe (in miktex\bin directory) the message like 'mgs is not a valid win32 application' is popped up. I do know that Windows XP is not supported MikTeX platform, but until the latest update everything works, and other programs (e.g. latex.exe) continue working
Can everybody tell how to avoid this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Igor

mgs in new MiKTeX version stop working with Windows XP

Hi Igor,

it seems the file msg.exe is corrupted. This can be an incomplete download or cause by an error during the download (or by a virus). I don't see that this file could be downloaded directly, at least I did not find it on CTAN, an perhaps try an update again, perhaps it gets fixed if the update contains it.

I use TeX Live 2017, also on Windows. Perhaps this may be an alternative option for you.

Thankis for reply. I've contacted to Christian Schenk, he argues that it is xp-specific problem, and this mgs.exe works well on 32-bit Windows 7. Maybe, Service Pack 3 is needed
