I had the same problem and then I replaced both packages for
\usepackage[applemac]{inputenc}
(I have a Mac), and now it works. I hope it helps.

I'm not sure whether it'll work, but that's what I do when I have the problem with \figure:
\vspace{-1in}
for example. Notice the number is negative, since you want to get rid of space. Hope it works!

I have to make a list of galaxies. I did like that:
