I applied your proposed solution to one of my tables and it works. However, for each individual footnote added, I get the following 7 errors no matter what is written in the 'footnote':
Missing } inserted.
Missing $ inserted.
Extra }, or forgotten \endgroup.
Extra }, or forgotten ...
