The default settings for installation on my system prevent me from using tlmgr-- to get that to work, I always have to change where texlive is installed, and then change the path. I wish it was not so weird, and also wish that the instructions included the tips you (and others) have provided. BTW ...

I tried to install Texlive 2020 on MXlinux 19.2.
I downloaded the GZ file, extracted its contents, and followed the instructions. Perl and Perl/tk are installed, but when I typed perl install-tl -gui, the gui installer failed to come up, and only the (awful) text version was available.
