A perfectly working TeX Live installation at ~user was broken by an upgrade from TeX Live 2009 to 2011.
I've managed to fix the problem except for the failure of TeX to locate the Type 1 (.pfb) fonts I have installed in my ~user TeX directory.
I've already run:
updmap --enable Map=/home/tekkie ...
