TeXnicCenter 2.0 - A short review

Post by localghost »

This morning I noticed Tino's announcement about TeXnicCenter 2.0 Alpha 1 [1]. It immediately made me start Windows and install the new version (beside the older version). I haven't done yet any testing with compilation, but I looked a little bit around and browsed the new interface.

The first eye-catcher was the auto-detection of MiKTeX in its current version and the generation of no less than five output profiles. I was happy to see that SumatraPDF was configured as the default PDF viewer for the concerned profiles.

Furthermore the menus have been slightly rearranged, but their structure hasn't become confusing. Users of the older version will get along with the new structure quite soon.

I will continue testing over the next few days. It's nice to see that the team finally managed to release the new version. Congratulations for that!

TeXnicCenter 2.0 - A short review

Post by localghost »

Over the weekend I continued my testing and almost everything went smoothly on my system². I started compiling documents with project managing and loaded project files once created with TXC 1.0 RC1. In this regard there is nothing to report about compatibility problems between the two versions.

TXC now appears more communicative. Errors and warnings are parsed from the log file and appear separated in the according output windows. These windows are scrolled smoothly from the bottom into the screen once the mouse pointer is hovering above them. They are hidden again by moving the mouse cursor outside. A very good idea since this maxes out the space for the actual editing section. Especially on wide screens with limited vertical space very useful.

At the moment I discovered only one minor issue which I describe more detailed in another thread [1]. It concerns all automatically generated profiles which have PDF as final output and SumatraPDF set as viewer. I managed to sort it out.
